Pivot

Pivot -

As Sophia of the “Golden Girls” would have said --- “Picture this,” it was the 1920’s and 30’s, my amazing Hungarian grandparents seemed to have it all.  My grandfather owned his family delicatessen, he owned an entire floor of an apartment building.  They had great friends, my grandmother played tennis, and my mother had absolutely nothing to worry about.

Then came the War.  World War II changed everything.  My grandfather was drafted, my mother and grandmother, at one point, went into hiding to survive.  They even spent time in a dog house.  They were Jews.

My grandparents came to “America” in December of 1948.  They spoke little to no English.  They had no money.  They had no idea what the future would bring.  They were sponsored by relatives.

Their relatives decided chicken farming was the future and put my grandfather to work managing a chicken farm.  Both of my grandparents went from wearing hand-tailored clothes to cleaning eggs and taking care of chickens.

As I mentioned, before the War, my grandfather was a well-to-do man.  My grandmother didn’t cook, she had a cook.  I was raised by my grandparents and my mother.  All three of them worked hard to provide for us.  We didn’t have a lot of money.  Comfort food in our house was chopped Spam with sour cream and noodles.  But -- there was love and gratitude.  A roof over our heads and food on the table.   My grandmother believed that all you need, in life, is the ability to think, a strong body, and the will to do anything it takes to survive.

So why do I start this blog series with this story?  This story taught me resilience and the importance of being able to pivot.  Russell Brunson has an amazing book and program – “30 Days, You Suddenly Lose Everything…” 

What would you do?  What have you done?

In the last year, we have all had to find ways to pivot.  If nothing else, the Covid lockdowns have taught us to be resourceful.  Standing in lines, purchasing limited quantities, scouting out toilet paper, many of us working from home --- we have all learned to pivot.
